DOG is my co-pilot

fool that I am
fool that I am

He came in the darkest of the days. The sky above US loomed with uncertainty and demons/ghosts from relationships past. Small in stature but walking talk with a big chip on his shoulder.
Had this spirit not made his disdain for life an obvious part of the frumpy character that stood before me…I would have turned and walked away.
‘Oh, no…not in our house! No, Momma’s boys! And, certainly, no Pretty Boys!’
Give me that one, I guess, with hesitancy in my voice.
Oh, the past can creep up behind us so quickly and leave us without a seconds notice.
Years went by and the Lesbian Home Companion allowed for our presence in his home.
Moments where his complete indifference to privacy gave way to’ forbidden to ever return’, ‘not allowed back’ and ‘could you please get off the beach’ warnings from the world at large

How is it a life can be so enmeshed in our own that trust is a given and love is granted. How can it be that without the footfall of the family pet, we are not truly a family?
The most cynical and the most obtuse. The hateful for humanity and the jaded by life…seem to turn to children at Christmas time when they set their sights on unconditional love.
There are so many things; obstacles, disabilities, demons that become lighter and easier to carry when greeted day in and day out by warm wet kisses.
Indeed there is so much our world that is filled with hatred and mistrust can learn by the simple process of being a dog.
Loving being loved. Comforting rather than seeking comfort. Altruistic and unabashed in slapstick comedy.
Perhaps, neither a woman nor a minority nor a leftist or a right winger is what is needed in office.
Perhaps, just maybe DOG for PRESIDENT would be just what the world needs.
