Laugh Over Tears

Valerie Harper passed the other day. Yup! Two bouts with cancer. Ten years later…she was with us. Until a few days ago.

Cancer kills! I get that but…comedy, laughter and giggles…heal.

I had a ‘friend’ ask,

‘Why so upset over Valerie Harper? She was 80 after all!’

Why so upset?

I grew up in a home filled with hate, bigotry, judgment and punishment. That is just what it is! However, out of one of the two television stations worth damn; on Saturday afternoons, I watched comedy.

This world we live in, particularly in these horrible times, I would rather laugh then cry. Valerie Harper’s death was not unexpected…the depth and death of her comedy? Missed by those of us that needed a little more…funny in our lives.

the Elephant in the Room

Laugh, I tell you
And you will turn back
The hands of time.
Smile, I tell you
And you will reflect
The face of the divine.
Sing, I tell you
And all the angels will sing with you!
Cry, I tell you
And the reflections found in your pool of tears –
Will remind you of the lessons of today and yesterday
To guide you through the fears of tomorrow

Humor the Ultimate Teacher

The Teacher

One zen student said, “My teacher is the best. He can go days without eating.”

The second said, “My teacher has so much self-control, he can go days without sleep.”

The third said, “My teacher is so wise that he eats when he’s hungry and sleeps when he’s tired.”

Lenny Bruce and Vet Tv

Can humor go too far?  Is a ‘good’ joke wasted on a particular few?  Those few who seem to have missed ‘punchlines’…when god was handing them out.

Personally, I love a good slapstick.  And, my wife?  A good (I use the term loosely) rom-com, is her shtick.

I discovered …Vet Tv

…as soon as the project got off the ground, critics honed in on what some called tasteless or downright toxic humor, raising questions about how best to reintegrate America’s ever-growing population of military veterans back into society. Are rape jokes and other gross gags crossing the boundaries of respectability really doing any good if they’re increasingly out of touch with the mainstream comedy? What kind of obligation does a network targeted at a narrow chunk of the population really have? And how much of content on the network is actually resonating with the country’s relatively diverse veteran population?

However, a long ago era,  just before my time: offering not only ‘Cinnamon Girl’ by Neil Young but…the one and only Lenny Bruce!  There had been the same heated debate about comedy going to far!

I believe, as many do, in this #45 era, all that can be done is laugh.  Laughter combats the anger, the confusion.  It makes us all feel human again.  Does it really where the humor comes from?  As long as it helps us take life less seriously.

What do Ford and Trump have in common?

Alec Baldwin does a middling impression of Donald Trump on the TV and a better one in real life, but though imitation is the best form of flattery, the President does not appear to care much for him. Now, Baldwin wants to know if Trump’s displeasure with SNL Trump amounts to a threat.

Indeed, upon watching a vaguely amusing border wall sketch on Saturday’s episode, Trump wondered out loud to his 58.4 million real and purchased followers whether or not a satirical television program should be “looked into” and/or amounts to “Collusion!” (spoiler alert: no.)

Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC! Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!
@realDonaldTrump
We are well past the point of making note of each time Trump transforms his Twitter account into a call to arms, not to mention that this is by no means the first time the President has sicced his MAGA chuds on SNL. But Baldwin seemed slightly concerned about this one, based on his tweet Sunday evening:
I wonder if a sitting President exhorting his followers that my role in a TV comedy qualifies me as an enemy of the people constitutes a threat to my safety and that of my family?
@ABFalecbaldwin

It is true that no sitting U.S. President has ever called for “retribution” against a comedy program. It is also noteworthy that though satirical programs were once very popular in Russia, once Trump’s leader crush took the lead, Russian officials axed them, instead utilizing humor as part of the government’s infamous propaganda machine.

But I still think the best thing to do is stick Trump and Baldwin in the Situation Room together and gently whisper, “Kiss!” though I suppose this is why they don’t let me do the war crimes.
